Melocena baccifera

  • Melocena baccifera is a species of bamboo belonging to the genus Melocena. It is 10 to 25 meters long. This species is originally found in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand.
  • It is the largest fruit producing species of bamboo, its fruit is called 'Muli' in North East India. Due to the sweetness of the fruit, animals are more attracted towards it.
  • The number of rats increases rapidly during the fruit period, however, after the fruit is over, rats start damaging the standing crops, leading to famine conditions.
