Melocena baccifera is a species of bamboo belonging to the genus Melocena. It is 10 to 25 meters long. This species is originally found in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand.
It is the largest fruit producing species of bamboo, its fruit is called 'Muli' in North East India. Due to the sweetness of the fruit, animals are more attracted towards it.
The number of rats increases rapidly during the fruit period, however, after the fruit is over, rats start damaging the standing crops, leading to famine conditions.
