Sagol Kangjei

  • Sagol Kangjei is a traditional game of Manipur similar to the modern polo game. Unlike the modern game of polo, the game is divided by the number of goals scored rather than by time.
  • There are no goalposts in this game of seven players and it is counted as a goal when the ball crosses the goal line.
  • The first mention of this game is found in 1606 AD in the 'Chithrol Kumbaba', the royal history of Manipur during the reign of Meidingu Khagemba (1597-1652 AD).
  • Home Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated a 122 feet tall statue of player playing Sagol Kangjei in Imphal, capital of Manipur.
