Thyreus narendrani

  • Thyreus narendrani, is a new species of cuckoo bee, which has been discovered from Kole wetlands region of Kerala.
  • It belongs to the family Apidae of order Hymenoptera. The genus Thyreus includes the cuckoo bees or cleptoparasitic bees.
  • Cuckoo bees lay eggs in the nests of other bees and live as parasite. These bees mostly parasitise on the bees of genus Amegilla and Anthophora.
  • Unlike other female bees, they do not have pollen-collecting structures. It is named after late T.C. professor Narendran who contributed to the field of Entomology.
