Allegator Gar

  • It is a ray-finned euryhaline (large saline expansion tolerant) fish and the largest species in the Gar family. Its scientific name is Atractosteus spatula.
  • Its body is torpedo shaped and the teeth are sharped while the head is like a crocodile.
  • It is mainly found in Central and North America. It is classified in the ‘Least Concerned’ in IUCN red List.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority discovered this rare fish for the first time in Srinagar's Dal Lake.
