Durga Puja: A Cultural Heritage

  • UNESCO has inscribed ‘Durga Puja festival of Kolkata’ on the representative list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’.
  • This list is prepared by the inter-governmental committee of UNESCO under the ‘UNESCO Convention, 2003’. This is aimed for the safeguarding of the world’s intangible heritages along with traditions and living expressions.
  • Durga Puja is a festival of feminine divinity and womanhood. Excellent manifestation of dance, music, rituals, crafts, cultural aspects etc occurs in it. This festival transcends the boundaries of caste, creed and economic classes and brings people together.
  • The number of India’s intangible cultural heritage included in the list has become 14 after inscribing of Durga Puja of Kolkata. Before it, Kumbh Mela (2017) and Yoga (2016) were included in this list.
