Light-malted Albatross

  • Recently light-malted albatross bird has been spotted near Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu) in Rameswaram. This Antarctic endemic species was first seen in the Gulf of Mannar in the continent of Asia in September, 2020.
  • Its scientific name is 'Phoebetri palpebrata'. it It has been listed under the 'Near Threatened' category in the Red List of IUCN.
  • Albatross birds are known as nomadic birds and they use wind direction to conserve their energy during flight.
  • Changes in wind patterns due to increase in atmospheric temperature are being seen as one of the reasons for the migration of this bird.
