Mytella Strigata

Mytella strigata also known as Charru mussel is a species of mussel found in South America.
In India, it is known as an invasive species which creates a barrier for the prawns to reach the sea bed by spreading like a sheet in the river bed.
The spread of this species is posing a threat to the locally found Yellow Clam (Manja Matti) and Green Mussels (Pachai Aaji).
Recently, for the first time an ecological crisis has arisen due to the spread of this species in Pulicat and Ennore coasts.
