Prosopis chilensis is an invasive species of tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is native to the arid regions of central Chile, southern Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
It is used as a shade tree and firewood as well as fodder for animals.
According to a study, this exotic invasive species is currently destroying the indigenous vegetation of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.
