• Researchers at the National Institute of Marine Sciences have developed a low-cost portable lantern-cum-mobile phone charging port called Roshni based on seawater or brackish water.
  • The lantern is powered by eco-friendly battery using sea water as electrolyte, magnesium alloy as anode and activated carbon compound as cathode.
  • The anode reacts with salt water to produce ions. The desired voltage power is generated by the flow of ions between anode and cathode.
  • There are LED lights in the Lower and front of Lantern that can burn for about 12 hours at a time. It has a USB port for charging mobile phones.
