Agricultural Mechanization

  • Agriculture Mechanization or agricultural mechanics refers to the use of machines in agricultural work, which increases the productivity of agricultural workers. A special scheme called 'Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization' (SMAM) was launched by the Government of India in the year 2014-15 to promote agricultural mechanization.
  • The scheme aims to provide affordable and accessible agricultural machines to ‘small and marginal farmers’ (SMFs) through the establishment of 'Custom Hiring Centers' (CHCs) and by creating hubs for high-tech and high-value agricultural equipments, farm machinery and banks. Distribution of various subsidized agricultural equipments and machines is also covered under this scheme.
  • The 'Custom Hiring Institution' provides for the provision of agricultural machines to small marginal farmers. Mechanization is important in improving the efficiency and efficacy of inputs used for crop production in agriculture. With mechanization being laborious, it is also very important to increase the productivity of crops.
  • It is worth mentioning that till now over 13.5 thousand custom hiring institutions have distributed agricultural machines to more than 13 lakh farmers.
