Athangudi tiles

  • Athangudi Tiles is a colourful decorative tile prevalent for nearly 500 years in Athangudi (Chettinad), a village in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. These handmade tiles, giving a unique glimpse of indigenous and foreign cultures as well as the rich culture of the Chettiar community.
  • Wooden pillars, Japanese tiles, Italian marble and mirrors with colourful artifacts from other countries were used in the palaces of the Chettiar community, for which the businessmen here started this industry for their repair and maintenance.
  • These tiles become more attractive and shiny as they get older. It is currently in great demand in both domestic and international markets.
  • These eco-friendly tiles are used to decorate the interior (floor, walls) parts of the houses. Recently, manufacturers have applied for this demanding Geographical Indication (GI Tag).
