Click Chemistry

  • Click Chemistry is a term that was introduced by K. B. Sharpless in 2001 to describe reactions that are high yielding, create only byproducts that can be removed without chromatography.
  • It is a novel approach for the synthesis of drug-like molecules that can speed up the drug discovery process using some practical and reliable reactions. It is currently used in living organisms and does not disrupt the normal chemistry of living cells.
  • Click chemistry is utilised in the development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA and creating materials that are more fit for purpose. Using bioorthogonal reactions, researchers have improved the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals.
