Uru

  • Uru is a wooden ‘dhow’ (ship or sailing vessel) made mainly of Malabar teak without using any modern technology.
  • The art and technique of making these ships originated from Arab and the Arabs named it dhow.
  • The existence of this traditional handicraft of Beypore (Kerala) is more than 2000 years old and the main classes associated with its manufacture are Odayi and Khalasi.
  • Beypore Uru is a symbol of Kerala's trade relations and friendship with the Gulf countries. There has been a demand for Geographical Indication for this.
