  • 'Apatani' is a famous textile weaving method of Arunachal Pradesh. The weaving on these clothes is done by the local 'Apatani tribe' people.
  • Apatani cloth is known for its 'geometric patterns' and 'angular designs'. These are woven for various rituals and cultural festivals and for wearing on general occasions as well.
  • The fabrics woven by them mainly include shawls (jig-jero) and jackets (supuntarii). Organic dyes are used for dyeing these fabrics, which are made by mixing various elements obtained from plants.
  • An application has been submitted before Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai for grant of 'Geographical Indication' (GI) tag to Apatani textile product in December 2021.
  • It is noteworthy that the Apatani tribe is also known for its 'fish-cum-paddy farming' model.
