International Air Connectivity Scheme

  • The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has launched 'International Air Connectivity Scheme' (IACS) (International Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik).
  • It aims to increase air connectivity from some states of India (especially the Northeast) to important international destinations and to accelerate social and economic development.
  • This scheme is also supported by the state governments. Under this, the respective state governments have already identified air routes to connect Imphal, Guwahati and Agartala to international destinations like Dhaka, Bangkok, Yangon, Kathmandu, Mandalay, Hanoi, Chittagong and Kunming.
  • At present there are two international airports in the North-East region at Guwahati and Imphal which are operated by Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) respectively.
  • Development and up-gradation of airports as per international standards is a continuous process, carried out by the concerned airport operators from time to time depending upon the commercial viability, traffic demand, land availability etc.
