Jingrwai Lawbei

  • This is a special tune of Kongthong village located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, which means the love song of the mother.
  • With the birth of the child, the mother teaches this tune and the adults around the child keep humming that tune, so that the child can identify that sound. This particular tune indicates the identity of that child.
  • This tune is usually inspired by nature and birds. There is a belief among people here that ghosts and spirits reside in the forest. In such a situation, if they call someone's name or hear it, the ghosts will do their black magic on that person.
  • The people of the village use this tune to convey their message to each other, that’s why this village is called 'Whistling Village'.
