Ocean Melting Greenland Mission

  • NASA launched the 'Ocean Melting Greenland (OMG) mission' 6 years ago. Its purpose was to assess glacial melting in Greenland.
  • Recently, some of the findings of this assessment have been presented-

 Due to global warming, the warm water of the oceans is the main reason for the melting of glaciers.

 The global ocean water level will rise by about 24 feet (7.4 m) if all glaciers in Greenland melt.

 Greenland's glaciers are currently melting six or seven times faster than they were 25 years ago.

 The upper surface of the oceans in Greenland is extremely cold, as it receives water from Arctic glaciers. Its lower surface is hot. So the glaciers at the bottom are melting four to five times faster.

  • The main task of this mission was to map the sea level, to find the depth of warm water in glaciers and to measure the salinity of water at different depths.
