Significance

  1. Recognition of Indian music: The award creates a recurring platform to honour artists whose work has made a significant contribution to Indian music, arts and cinema.
  2. Preservation of a cultural legacy: Naming the award after Dr. Hazarika links contemporary recognition of artists with the preservation of his creative legacy.
  3. National visibility for Assam’s culture: The ceremony in New Delhi is intended to present Hazarika’s work and Assam’s cultural traditions to a national audience.
  4. Cultural connection across regions: Hazarika’s music and humanist themes crossed linguistic and regional boundaries. The centenary programme provides an opportunity to discuss how music can connect diverse communities.

Challenges

  • Continuity: The award’s impact will depend on consistent selection and presentation every three years.
  • Transparent selection: Clear criteria can help establish its credibility as a national-level honour.
  • Wider reach: Hazarika’s works and the award’s purpose need to reach audiences beyond major cities.
  • Archiving and access: Preserving recordings, writings and films in accessible formats can help keep the legacy available to future generations.

Way Forward

  • The Assam government can publish the award’s selection criteria and maintain an accessible record of its recipients.
  • Digital archives, translations, educational programmes and performances across states could help introduce Hazarika’s work to younger audiences and people unfamiliar with Assamese music.

Conclusion

  • The first Bhupen Hazarika National Award will honour Usha Mangeshkar while marking the close of the maestro’s birth centenary celebrations.
  • Its long-term value will depend on sustained recognition of artistic contribution and meaningful efforts to preserve and share Hazarika’s cultural legacy.
