The Indian Navy will commission its sixth indigenously built stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri (F38), built under Project 17A, in Visakhapatnam on July 11. This marks a significant milestone in India's indigenous warship building program and the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.

What is INS Mahendragiri ?

• INS Mahendragiri is the sixth stealth frigate of the Nilgiri-class developed under Project 17A.
• It was designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) of the Indian Navy.
• It was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
• It is named after the Mahendragiri range of the Eastern Ghats.
• It is the first warship of the Indian Navy to be named "Mahendragiri".

How many ships are being built ?

A total of 7 warships are being built under this project. They are being constructed by two major Indian shipyards:

1. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL): 4 ships
2. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE): 3 ships

All these ships are named after famous mountain ranges of India.
