Why in the News ?

India has consistently made strides towards energy efficiency and conservation. To this end, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) annually recognizes industries, organizations, and individuals for their energy-efficient efforts. Recently, BEE invited applications for the 35th National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025.

What are the National Energy Conservation Awards ?

• The National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) are India's most prestigious platform that recognizes excellence, innovation, and leadership in energy efficiency and conservation.
• The awards were instituted in 1991 by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
• Objectives
  • To reduce energy consumption and promote energy efficiency.
  • To motivate industries, organizations, and individuals to adopt energy-efficient technologies and practices.
  • To promote an energy-conscious lifestyle in society.

Award Categories

Awards will be presented at NECA 2025 for various sectors and contributions. These include: 

• Industry: Outstanding efforts to enhance energy efficiency in the production and construction sectors.
• Transport: Pioneering efforts to reduce fuel consumption and adopt green transportation practices.
• Building: Innovation in energy-efficient building design and operation.
• Institution: Evaluation through a State/SDA (State Designated Agency).

• Material Producer: Contribution to energy-efficient material manufacturing.
• Influencer / Digital Content Creator – New Category:

About the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency was established on March 1, 2002, under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

Mission

• To develop policies and strategies within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
• To promote energy efficiency by emphasizing self-regulation and market principles.

Objective

• To reduce the energy intensity of the Indian economy.

Functions

• To coordinate with designated consumers and designated agencies.
• To utilize existing resources and infrastructure in performing the functions assigned under the Energy Conservation Act.
