National Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) Conclave-2025

Why in News?

• National Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) Conclave-2025 was organized on 12 September 2025 in New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel.

Key Institutions:

Three key institutions played a key role in this conclave:

• Department of Health Research (DHR) – This department guides health research and policy making.
• Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – It is the apex organization for medical and health research in India.
• ​​VRDL Network – This network operates virus research and diagnostic facilities across the country and contributes significantly to epidemic management.

Significance of Conclave

VRDL Conclave provided a common platform to scientists, researchers and industry.

• Collaboration, deliberation and innovation in various areas of health research were discussed on this platform.
• This conclave will help in further strengthening India's self-reliant health vision.
• New opportunities will develop in the field of health innovation, disease identification and epidemic management in the country.

Role of National Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL)

• The VRDL network plays the role of a sentinel of security in dealing with epidemics and infectious diseases through virus research and diagnostic labs located across the country.
• These labs have made significant contributions in the field of rapid testing, infection identification and research in many health crises including COVID-19.

New Initiative: IVD Validation Portal

• The In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) Validation Portal and Validation Protocols were also launched during the conclave.
• This portal will help in making health tests and technologies fast, transparent and industry-friendly.
• New tests and technologies will be made available quickly and safely through the portal.
• This platform will ensure better coordination between industry, research and regulatory bodies.

India's Health Research System

• India is building a strong, self-reliant and globally relevant health research system.
• For the first time, 13 ministries and departments are working together under the National One Health Mission.
• This coordinated effort sets an example for health security not only in India but also globally.
• India is now playing a leading role in early identification of infections, indigenous test validation and development of new technologies.
