NCERT Launches 20-Hour AI and Computational Thinking Module for Classes 9–12
Why in News?
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a 20-hour introductory module on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) for students in Classes 9 to 12.
The module has been developed in consultation with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Madras and Jodhpur.
Key Features of the Module
The module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI.
Its objective is to develop logical and critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students.
It uses activity-based learning to explain the functioning, applications, possibilities, and limitations of AI.
Students will learn how machines learn from examples, how AI is used in everyday life, and how to identify misleading digital content such as deepfakes.
It also emphasizes verifying AI-generated information rather than blindly trusting its outputs.
Emphasis on Ethical and Safe Use of AI
The module covers data privacy, misinformation, fairness, digital safety, and the ethical use of AI.
Students will learn through discussions, practical exercises, experimentation, and reflection.
According to NCERT, the activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, enabling participation across diverse school settings.
Significance
AI Literacy:Students will develop a basic understanding of how AI works, its applications, and its limitations.
Development of Logical Thinking: Computational Thinking will help students understand problems systematically and identify appropriate solutions.
Detection of Deepfakes and Misinformation: Students will become better equipped to identify AI-generated misleading content and verify information.
Data Privacy and Digital Safety: The module will raise awareness about protecting personal information and using AI safely and ethically.
Future Readiness: Early exposure to AI will help prepare students for future education, skill development, and technology-driven employment opportunities.
Responsible Use of Technology: Students will learn to apply their own judgement and critical thinking rather than blindly relying on AI-generated answers.
