New initiative for investment security by SEBI

  • What is it: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has decided to make a valid UPI address mandatory for registered intermediaries.
  • Objective: To ensure secure payments and combat fraud.
    • Identification of new UPI address
    • The new UPI address will be prefixed with ‘@valid’, which will be effective from October 1, 2025.
    • It will be linked to the name of self-certified syndicate banks with the handle ‘valid’ for ease of identification for investors.
      • Example: abc.bkr@validhdfc
  • Number of intermediaries: 8000 to 9000 intermediaries, such as brokers, bankers, investment advisors etc. will have to shift to the new UPI handle.
  • Impact on SIP
    • There will be no impact on existing SIP (Systematic Investment Plan).
    • Old UPI IDs will be closed from December 11, 2026.
  • Security and Awareness
    • SEBI will allow investors to ensure that they are transacting only with certified intermediaries with the help of a new tool 'SEBI Check App'.
    • This app will work in partnership with Google Playstore, allowing only legitimate apps on the platform.
  • Steps against cyber fraud: SEBI will run a campaign to make investors aware about cyber fraud and this new initiative over the next two years.
  • Responsibility of intermediaries
    • Registered intermediaries have been directed to make investors aware about this new initiative and display it in prominent places.
    • This move is an important step towards establishing a safe and reliable payment system for investors.
  • Collaboration: This system will be implemented in consultation with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and other stakeholders.
