Why in the news?

• Kerala won the title of Senior National Men's Handball Championship

Key Points:-

• Kerala won their first Senior National Men's Handball Championship title by defeating Chandigarh 34-31.
• The final of the tournament was held at Changanassery in Kerala.
• Kerala reached the final for the first time, defeating Services in the semi-finals
• Chandigarh secured their place by defeating Indian Railways
• Devendra of Kerala was adjudged the best player of the championship while Rahul received the best goalkeeper award.

Handball Federation of India, Rohtak

• The sport of handball in India and the Handball Federation of India (HFI) were founded by Mr. Jagat Singh Chauhan of Rohtak.
• He was an alumnus of YMCA College of Physical Education, Madras.
• He was the founder/father of handball, netball and throw ball sports in India.
• HFI was established on 10 October 1971 at a meeting chaired by Professor Dharam Singh Dhillon at Rohtak, Haryana.
• Mr. Jagat Singh Chauhan, the first General Secretary of HFI was also present at this meeting.
• HFI was registered on 15 June 1972 at Rohtak, Haryana under the Societies Registration Act XXI, 1860 as amended by the Punjab Amendment Act, 1957.
• The founding members of HFI were Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Vidarbha and Uttar Pradesh.
• HFI is the administrative and governing body for handball, beach handball and wheelchair handball in the Republic of India.

Objective:-

• To promote and develop handball in the country.

• The Handball Association of India is the governing body for handball in India.
• HAI is a member of the Asian Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation.
• It is also a member of the Commonwealth Handball Association and the South Asian Handball Federation.
• HAI replaces the Handball Federation of India as the official handball governing body in 2023.
