One Health Consortium

  • The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has launched India's first ‘One Health’ consortium to monitor bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections of zoonotic and transboundary pathogens. This is the first ‘One Health’ project of D.B.T.
  • This project will focus on developing additional methods for understanding the spread of emerging diseases in addition to the use and monitoring of existing diagnostic tests. This is one of the biggest health programs launched since COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The consortium comprises of 27 organizations and led by DBT-National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Hyderabad. Premier institutions like AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur and several wildlife agencies were part of this consortium.
  • It is to be noted that the concept of one health includes interrelationship between environment, animals and human health. It emphasizes the need of holistic approach and collaborative efforts on national and international level to secure and achieve optimum health for man, animals, plants and environment.
