Shadow Fishing

  • "Tchay-e-Gard Shikar' is a traditional method of fishing in Kashmir, which is also known as 'shadow fishing'. This method is especially related to Anchar Lake located in Soura Area of Srinagar. Achar Lake is connected to Dal Lake through a channel.
  • In this, fishermen carry harpoon (a long and thin tool with a pointed end) and hide under the clothes or temporary umbrellas at one end of wooden boats. Its shadow attracts the fishes that form on the surface of the water, which makes it easier for the fish to hunt.
  • This fishing technique is often used during winters as the fish remain below the surface of the water due to the cold, but go in the direction of shadow in search of food. This method of fishing has been in use since the beginning of the twentieth century under the Dogra regime.
  • It is worth mentioning that the wooden boats used in Dal Lake and surrounding areas are called 'Shikara', which are often made of cedar wood.
