The Sarna Religion

  • Sarna Dharma, based on the nature worship, is practiced by tribals in many Indian states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Bihar and West Bengal. It is also known as Adi Dharma.
  • The followers of this religion faith is in water, forest and land. These people pray to trees and hills, believing in the protection of forest areas.
  • Its followers has demand the central government to recognize Sarna as a religion and separate Sarna religious code. Their demand is that they should be counted under this category in the upcoming census.
  • According to the 2011 Census, the number of people who had identified themselves as Sarna or Sararthi under the 'Other' column was about 50 lakh. This number is more than the recorded followers of Jainism.
