India’s First 'Make in India' Hydrogen Plant: A Historic Step Towards Clean Energy
Why in News ?
The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), located in Kandla, Gujarat, has launched India’s first indigenously developed 'Make in India' 1 Megawatt green hydrogen plant.
The plant was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy journey.
Key Features of the Project
Capacity: Initially 1 Megawatt
Location:Deendayal Port, Kandla, Gujarat
Target: Expand to 10 Megawatt capacity by 2026
Production: 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually (at full capacity)
Objective:To green and decarbonize port operations
Usage: For buses, street lighting, tugs, ships, and industrial units
Indigenous Technology & 'Make in India' Vision
The plant completely uses indigenous technology.
The electrolyzer used is manufactured in India, supporting the 'Make in India' initiative and promoting self-reliance in clean energy technologies.
Plan for Rapid Expansion
By end of 2025, the plant’s capacity will be upgraded to 5 Megawatts.
By mid-2026, the aim is to operationalize the full 10 Megawatt facility.
This plant is expected to serve as a model for other Indian ports.
Contribution to Environment & Energy Security
Green hydrogen is a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.
According to DPA, this initiative will lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions at the port.
It will help position India as a global leader in sustainable maritime transport.
Government’s Role and Support
The foundation stone of this project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bhuj on 26 May 2025.
The government has described it as a new benchmark in green energy innovation.
