SASCI Scheme: Tourism Development for Lesser-Known Sites

Why in news ?

  • Recently, the Ministry of Tourism approved 40 tourism projects under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale (SASCI Scheme), providing ₹3,295.76 crore in central financial assistance.
  • The scheme aims to develop lesser-known but iconic tourist sites across India and position them on the global tourism map.

Project Selection Method

Projects were evaluated using a competitive, challenge-based model, considering:

  1. Connectivity and accessibility of the site.
  2. Existing tourism ecosystem and infrastructure.
  3. Environmental impact and carrying capacity.
  4. Availability of public utilities and facilities.
  5. Potential increase in tourist numbers and spending.
  6. Employment and livelihood opportunities.
  7. Private investment potential and long-term sustainability.

Approved Projects and Financial Commitment

  • Total approved projects: 40
  • Total central investment: 3,295.76 crore
  • Types of projects include:
    • Restoration of heritage and cultural sites
    • Development of eco-tourism parks
    • Infrastructure at pilgrimage and spiritual sites
    • Promotion of adventure tourism

Operational Structure and State Responsibility
