A Trusted Strategic Partner

Japan sees India not only as an economic opportunity but also as a reliable democratic partner. Both countries share similar views on regional stability, freedom of navigation, and maintaining a rules-based Indo-Pacific.

A Fast-Growing Economy

With one of the world's fastest-growing economies, India offers tremendous opportunities in infrastructure, digital technology, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing—areas where Japanese companies have significant expertise.

A Partnership That Goes Beyond Trade

Strong Investment Ties

Japan is already one of India's biggest foreign investors. From metro rail projects and industrial corridors to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train, Japanese investments have played a major role in India's infrastructure growth.

Expanding Business Opportunities

Nearly 1,400 Japanese companies operate in India across manufacturing, automobiles, electronics, logistics, and financial services. The 2026 summit is expected to attract even more private-sector investment.

Growing Bilateral Trade

Trade between the two countries has crossed US$27.5 billion, with both governments aiming to further increase commerce by improving market access and promoting local currency trade.

Technology Is Driving the Next Phase

Semiconductors

India and Japan are strengthening cooperation to build secure semiconductor supply chains through chip manufacturing, packaging, research, and workforce development.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence has become a new pillar of the partnership. Both countries are expanding collaboration in AI research, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and trusted technologies.

Critical Minerals

Lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are becoming increasingly important for electric vehicles and clean energy. India and Japan are working together to secure reliable supplies of these strategic minerals.

Working Together for a Stable Indo-Pacific

Shared Vision

India and Japan believe in a Free, Open and Inclusive Indo-Pacific, where international laws are respected and sea routes remain open for global trade.

Quad Cooperation

Along with the United States and Australia, both countries are strengthening cooperation through the Quad, focusing on maritime security, disaster response, emerging technologies, and resilient supply chains.

Defence Partnership

Regular military exercises, defence dialogues, and technology cooperation have made India and Japan close security partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

The North-East: A Unique Area of Cooperation

Act East Forum

Japan is the only country with a dedicated platform—the India-Japan Act East Forum—to support the development of India's North-East.

Building Regional Connectivity

Both countries are investing in roads, bridges, urban infrastructure, tourism, energy, and skill development projects that connect North-East India with Southeast Asia.

Local-Level Partnership

The newly launched India-Japan Governors Network is encouraging direct cooperation between Indian states and Japanese prefectures, creating new opportunities for investment and cultural exchange.

What Can We Expect from the Summit ?

The summit is expected to deliver new agreements in investment, semiconductors, AI, clean energy, critical minerals, defence technology, and supply chain resilience. Discussions on increasing Rupee-Yen trade could also reduce dependence on the US dollar and strengthen financial cooperation.

Challenges Remain

Despite strong relations, some issues continue to slow progress. Bilateral trade remains below its potential, infrastructure projects often face implementation delays, and global economic uncertainty continues to affect investment decisions.

Why This Partnership Matters

India and Japan are no longer connected only through trade or development projects. Their relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership based on shared democratic values, economic cooperation, and regional security.

As both countries prepare to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, the India-Japan partnership is expected to play a major role in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific and the global economy.

Antarctica's mysterious volcano spews gold worth billions of rupees every year! Learn about Mount Erebus's scientific secrets.

Why in the news ?

Recently, Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica, has once again sparked discussion. According to scientists, it is the only known volcano in the world that releases microscopic crystals of pure gold into the atmosphere. It is estimated that this volcano emits microscopic gold particles at a rate of approximately 80 grams per day, with an annual value of over 19 crore rupees.

Key Points

  • Mount Erebus is the world's southernmost active volcano.
  • It is the only known volcano on Earth that emits microscopic crystals of pure gold.
  • Approximately 80 grams of microscopic gold particles are released into the atmosphere every day.
  • Gold particles can travel with the wind for approximately 1,000 kilometers.
  • Scientists still don't understand how this gold is actually formed and reaches the atmosphere.

What is Mount Erebus ?

  • Mount Erebus is an active volcano located on Ross Island in Antarctica.
  • It is located near the Ross Sea and approximately 1,350 kilometers from the South Pole.

Its Key Features

  • It is the world's southernmost active volcano.
  • It contains a permanent lava lake.
  • It continuously emits volcanic gases.

How does gold emerge from volcanoes ?

  • According to scientists, extremely minute quantities of pure gold crystals are present in the hot volcanic gases emanating from Mount Erebus.
  • These particles are in the form of microscopic crystals.
  • Their size can be up to 60 micrometers.
  • They can travel up to 1000 kilometers with the wind.
  • They eventually settle on the ice of Antarctica.
  • Studies conducted with an electron microscope revealed that these are not just dust particles, but pure gold particles with a well-organized crystalline structure.

The Scientific Process of Gold Formation

  • Scientists believe that volcanic gases contain compounds containing chlorine and sulfur.
  • At high temperatures, gold rises with these gases.
  • As the gases cool, the gold separates and forms tiny crystals.
  • However, this process at Mount Erebus appears different from that at other volcanoes.

Is gold found in other volcanoes ?

  • Yes, scientists have found trace amounts of gold in the gases of other active volcanoes, such as :
    • Kīlauea (Hawaii)
    • Mount Etna (Italy)
    • Augustine Volcano (Alaska)
    • El Chichón (Mexico)
  • But Mount Erebus is the only known volcano to emit crystalline pure gold particles into the atmosphere.

The Mystery Remains

  • Scientists have proposed two major hypotheses to explain this phenomenon:

1. Direct Crystallization from Gases

  • According to this theory, chlorine-rich volcanic gases form gold crystals upon cooling. However, due to the extremely low gold content of the gases, this theory remains questionable.

2. Pre-Formed Crystals in the Lava Lake

  • According to another theory, microscopic gold crystals first form slowly on the surface of the lava lake and later reach the atmosphere with the gases.
  • To date, none of these theories has been conclusively confirmed.

Scientific Importance

  • Helps in understanding volcanic geochemistry.
  • New information on the process of metal movement within the Earth.
  • Useful in studying the chemical composition of volcanic gases.
  • Contributes to understanding the natural processes of mineral formation.

Conclusion

Mount Erebus is one of Earth's most unique volcanoes. Its permanent lava lake, continuous gas emissions, and emission of microscopic crystals of pure gold into the atmosphere make it extremely important scientifically. Despite more than three decades of research, the exact process by which this volcano produces and emits gold crystals remains unsolved. This is why Mount Erebus remains a major focus of fascination for researchers in geology and volcanology.
