Why in news ?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah today paid tribute to Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya on the occasion of Engineer's Day.

National Engineer's Day

  • Engineer's Day is celebrated every year on 15 September in India. Its purpose is to honor the individuals who have contributed in the field of engineering and to inspire the youth towards science, technology and innovation.
  • Engineer's Day in India is organized on the birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya. He was a great engineer, planner and educationist of India. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Objectives and Significance:

  • To inspire youth in the field of engineering.
  • To recognize the contribution of engineers in the development and technological progress of the country.
  • To promote innovation, creativity and scientific thinking.

Events and Activities:

  • Born: 15 September 1861, Madras Presidency (present-day Karnataka)

    • Received technical education at the University of Tokyo and Indian Engineering Institutes.
  • Professional life:
    • He was a great engineer, planner and educationist of India.
    • He successfully implemented many major infrastructure projects and schemes.
  • Contribution of M. Visvesvaraya:
    • M. Visvesvaraya successfully implemented many major infrastructure projects and engineering schemes in India.
    • He is famous for the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam and the modern water management system in Bangalore.
