  • Coconut cultivation is closely connected with small and marginal farmers, rural employment, food processing, traditional industries and exports.

Economic Significance of Coconut

  • According to the ICC, coconut is cultivated over 12.2 million hectares in more than 90 countries, producing around 67 billion nuts annually. The global export value of coconut products reached approximately US$19.61 billion in 2024.

Nutritional and Health Benefits of Coconut

  • Coconut Water: Provides fluids and naturally occurring electrolytes, making it a popular beverage, particularly in tropical regions.
  • Coconut Flesh: Fresh coconut meat provides dietary fat and fibre along with small amounts of various micronutrients.
  • Quick Source of Energy: Coconut products contain fats that can provide dietary energy. However, claims that ordinary coconut oil behaves exactly like purified medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil are misleading.
  • Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is widely used in cooking, traditional food preparations, cosmetics and personal-care products.

Environmental Importance of Coconut

  • Coconut-based farming systems can support diversified tropical agriculture by allowing compatible crops to be cultivated within coconut plantations.
  • Its by-products also have considerable potential for productive reuse. Coconut husk can be converted into coir, while shells can be used for products such as charcoal and activated carbon.
  • Greater utilisation of such by-products can reduce agricultural waste while creating additional income opportunities.
