World International Justice Day 2025- 17 July

Why in News?

  • World International Justice Day is celebrated every year on 17 July; which is a celebration of the universal spirit of justice, accountability and human rights.

Objectives of this day

  • To ensure justice at the global level against international crimes.
  • To provide justice to war victims, displaced persons and those who have suffered atrocities.
  • To protect human rights and strengthen the role of legal institutions.
  • To promote peace and stability by fixing accountability of the culprits.

History

  • On 17 July 1998, the "Rome Treaty" was adopted during a historic conference in Rome (Italy).
  • Under this treaty, the way was paved for the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
  • In memory of this important event, in the year 2010, in a conference held in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, it was decided to celebrate 17 July as World International Justice Day.

Introduction to International Criminal Court (ICC)

  • It is the world's first permanent, independent and international tribunal which prosecutes those people who have committed very serious crimes.
  • It includes four major international crimes - genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes related to aggression.
  • The headquarters of this court is located in Hague, Netherlands and it has been working since July 2002.
  • India has not yet signed the Treaty of Rome, so it is not a member of ICC.
  • India believes that some sections of ICC can be a hindrance to its national sovereignty, military action and internal security policies.
  • India also fears that ICC has excessive influence of vetoed countries of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which may affect impartiality.
