Why in News ?

  • World Ozone Day is celebrated every year on 16 September. Its purpose is to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the ozone layer.

History:

  • This day is celebrated in memory of the Montreal Protocol.
  • The Montreal Protocol was signed on 16 September 1987.
  • The Montreal Protocol is a landmark multilateral environmental agreement.
  • It regulates the production and consumption of man-made chemicals referred to as ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
  • The first World Ozone Day was celebrated in the year 1994.

Ozone

  • It is a gas composed of three atoms of oxygen.
  • Ozone is a pale blue gas with a characteristic odor at room temperature.
  • It is found in two main regions of the Earth's atmosphere - the stratosphere and the troposphere.
  • It is slightly soluble in water.
  • The ozone layer about 6 to 30 miles above the Earth's surface reduces the amount of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the Earth's surface.
