Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure

  • 'Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission' was launched in Varanasi (UP) by the Prime Minister in order to strengthen the ‘Health care infrastructure’ in the country. This scheme would be implemented in addition to the ‘National Health Mission’.
  • The objective of this mission is to address the existing gaps in critical care facilities and primary care public health infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. The duration of the mission has been fixed at 6 years.
  • Under this mission 17,788 'Health and Wellness Centers' will be set up in rural areas of 10 specially identified states and 11,024 'Health and Wellness Centers' in urban areas of all states. Priority would be given to backward and aspirational districts of the country.
  • Intensive care services would be provided through the 'Exclusive Critical Care Hospital Block' in all the districts with a population of more than 5 lakhs of the country, while the remaining districts will be covered through 'referral services' and 'Integrated Public Health Laboratories' will be set up in all the districts.
  • Under the mission, provision has been made for the establishment of 'National Institution of One Health', 4 new National Institute of Virology, a regional research platform for the South-East Asia region, 9 Bio-safety Level-III laboratories and 5 new National Centers for Disease Control across different parts of the country.
