City of Literature: Kozhikode

  • Kozhikode, Kerala was named 'City of Literature' by UNESCO.
  • The city joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
  • This announcement was made on World Cities Day celebrated on 31 October.
  • It became India's first literary city.
  • Kozhikode is a permanent venue of the annual ‘Kerala Literature Festival’.
  • Appu Nedungadi's 'Kundalatha' was the first Malayalam novel published from Kozhikode in 1887.
