GenoMICC Project

  • The Genomic Project (Genetics of Mortality in Critical Care: GenoMICC) is a research study that brings together physicians and scientists from around the world to discover genetic factors that lead to serious illnesses.
  • The scientists involved compare the genetic structures of critically ill patients with members of the general population at multiple levels of research.
  • Since 2015, the project has been involved in the study of emerging infections such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), flu, sepsis and other forms of severe disease.
  • Recently, scientists in the United Kingdom have identified 16 new genetic variants that make a person more vulnerable to severe COVID-19 infection as part of this project.
