Glycosmis albicarpa-Sanskriti IAS

Recently, a new species of 'Gin Berry' has been discovered in Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu. Its botanical name is Glycosmis albicarpa.
The unique feature of 'Gin Aroma' is found in this berry. It is popular as an edible fruit.
This species is endemic to the Southern Western Ghats, with distinctive large white fruits. This species belongs to the orange family, Rutaceae.
Most of these plant species are collected from forests, which are used by the local people for their medicines and food.
This is a small tree of evergreen species. It was found as a single population in the Tirunelveli semi-evergreen forests in the Panagudi forest section with an area of about 2 Sq km. This area require special protection at present.
