Mytella Strigata

  • Mytella strigata also known as Charru mussel is a species of mussel found in South America.
  • In India, it is known as an invasive species which creates a barrier for the prawns to reach the sea bed by spreading like a sheet in the river bed.
  • The spread of this species is posing a threat to the locally found Yellow Clam (Manja Matti) and Green Mussels (Pachai Aaji).
  • Recently, for the first time an ecological crisis has arisen due to the spread of this species in Pulicat and Ennore coasts.
