Permafrost Peatlands

Permafrost peatland is a type of wetland beneath permafrost. It is known that permafrost is a area that has been frozen at 0°C or below for at least two continuous years.

• Due to extremely low temperature, anaerobic decomposition prevent here. It is vitally important to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change, to preserve biodiversity, to reduce the risk of floods and to ensure safe drinking water.

• Peatlands are the largest natural terrestrial carbon store, covering only 3% of the global land surface, but storing twice as much carbon as all the world's forests.

• Generally it is found in polar regions, specially Greenland, Alaska, Russia, Canada, Siberia and some mountainous regions.

• According to scientists, permafrost peatlands located in Europe and Western Siberia may melt by 2040 due to increase in global temperature.
