Radio Frequency Identification: RFID

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a special type of radio technology that uses radio waves to identify a tag (smart label) attached to an object.
  • A microchip is attached to the tag in which the information related to the object is stored. R. F.I.D. tag works like a barcode and magnetic strips. However, for barcodes and magnetic strips optical scanners are essential, whereas R. F. I.D. used Radio technology (Line of Sight) to read the data in the tag.
  • It was first used in the year 1970s. Usually R. F. ID tags are used to keep records of pets. But in recent years it is being used more in various commercial and industrial sectors.
  • Recently, the Indian Army has started* Radio Frequency Identification Tagging of its Ammunition Inventory. Its objective is to bring transparency in the management and monitoring of armaments.
