  • He was the Finance Secretary in the Finance Ministry from 1985 to 1989.
  • He was the 18th RBI Governor between 1990 and 1992.
  • He is credited with getting the country out of the balance of payments crisis.
  • During his tenure, India adopted the stabilization program of IMF, where the rupee was devalued and economic reform program started.
