The toque macaque is endemic to Sri Lanka, where it is locally known as 'rileva'. Sri Lanka plans to export 1 lakh Toque macaque monkeys to China.
The swirl of hair on its head top makes it different from other monkey species. Male monkeys are physically larger than females.
It is the smallest species in the genus ‘Macaca’ with the longest tail relative to its body size. Its scientific name is Macaca sinica.
These monkeys are found in dry areas and high hilly areas. These are classified as Endangered in the red list of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
