Yellow Band Disease

  • Yellow-band disease is a bacterial infection that adversely affects coral. This causes light yellow or white spots on the infected coral reef.
  • It destroys the main energy source of the coral symbiotic photosynthetic algae zooxanthalli which causes the death of the coral.
  • Rising water temperatures due to climate change, overfishing and pollution can make coral more vulnerable to yellow-band disease.
  • At present the coral reef on Samsae San island of Thailand is being destroyed due to the infection of this disease.
