Pamban Bridge

Why in news?

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Pamban Rail Bridge on 6 April 2025 (Ram Navami)
• It connects Ramanathapuram to Rameswaram Island.
• Built at a cost of ₹535 crore, the bridge will strengthen railway connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
• On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also flag off a new train service between Tambaram-Rameswaram

Inspection and Safety:

• On 26 March 2025, Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh inspected the bridge.
• Testing of the central part of the bridge was successfully completed.

Old Pamban Rail Bridge:

• The structure of the bridge has weakened, due to which it cannot be fully preserved.
• It was built in 1914.
• It will be gradually destroyed, while some parts will be preserved as heritage.
