India elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2026–28 India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a two-year term starting in 2026.

About the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

  • Introduction: ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It focuses on coordination, policy review, policy dialogue, and recommendations on economic, social, and environmental issues, along with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Establishment: It was established in 1945 under the UN Charter.
  • Membership: The Council consists of 54 member countries elected by the United Nations General Assembly for a three-year term.
    • The seats are distributed based on geographical regions (Africa, Asia, Latin America, Western Europe, etc.).

Key Functions of ECOSOC

  • Promoting Sustainable Development: ECOSOC plays a vital role in implementing the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing a balance between economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection.
  • Policy Formulation and Coordination: It facilitates coordination among countries, UN agencies, and non-governmental organizations to address global challenges such as poverty eradication, climate change, and inequality.
  • Platform for Global Dialogue: ECOSOC serves as a platform where various stakeholders can share their views and develop collective solutions.
  • Advisory Role: It provides advisory inputs on social and economic issues to the United Nations General Assembly and other UN bodies.

India’s Role and Contribution

India’s election to ECOSOC not only reflects its diplomatic acumen but also highlights its active participation in the global development agenda.

  • Voice of Developing Nations: India has consistently supported the interests of the Global South. Within ECOSOC, India will strengthen the perspectives of developing nations on issues like poverty eradication, education, health, and gender equality.
