Why in news?
Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on 14 September
Its purpose is to explain the importance of Hindi and promote it
Why is Hindi Day celebrated on 14 September?
Hindi was declared the official language of the country on 14 September 1949
That is why India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru decided to celebrate Hindi Day on 14 September
The first Hindi Day was celebrated in the year 1953

The name Hindi means land of the Indus River
In the early 11th century, Persian-speaking people gave the name 'Hindi' to the language spoken along the Indus River
Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India
About 70% of the country's population can understand Hindi
Hindi is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin, Spanish and English
Constitutional provisions related to language
Article 343 - Official language of the Union.
The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.
Article 344 - Commission and Committee of Parliament on Official Language.
Article 351 - Directive for development of Hindi language.
22 official languages
including Hindi in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution
