Hindi

• The name Hindi means land of the Indus River
• In the early 11th century, Persian-speaking people gave the name 'Hindi' to the language spoken along the Indus River
• Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India
• About 70% of the country's population can understand Hindi
• Hindi is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin, Spanish and English
