Suriname's Parliament elects Jennifer Simons as first woman President

Why in news?

Recently, the Suriname Parliament unanimously elected Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as the country's first woman President.
She will hold the presidency for a term from 2025 to 2030.

Parliamentary elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2025.
No party got a clear majority.
Former President Desi Bouterse's party National Democratic Party (NDP) won 18 seats, while the main opposition party Progressive Reform Party (PRP) won 17 seats.
The NDP, along with 5 other smaller parties, secured a total majority of 34 seats (required 2/3 majority).
After this, the Parliament elected Dr. Simons as President and Gregory Rusland as Vice President.
